LaGrange Police Department 2008 Citizen’s Academy

The LaGrange Police Department hosts an annual police citizen’s academy and meets once a week for ten weeks.  The academy is a community oriented police project that is free of charge to persons eighteen years of age or older with exceptions handled on a case by case basis.  The purpose of the academy is to introduce the community to its police department and to foster a positive relationship with the officers and staff of the department.  We also introduce the community to the different facets of law enforcement and attempt to dispel myths about police work.

Class attendees are introduced to the command structure of our agency and are given instruction on topics including: Crime scene investigation, Evidence processing, Traffic enforcement, Communications, The judicial system, The corrections system, and many other topics.

In addition to classroom study, participants take tours of Oldham County Central Dispatch, The Oldham County Justice Center, and The Oldham County Jail.  All of the study culminates in a ride-along with an officer during a regular shift assignment.  At the end of the ten week course, we celebrate the conclusion of the academy with a dinner and presentation of a certificate of completion.

Realistically, most people meet police officers during the course of some negative event, be it a traffic violation, or some sort of criminal investigation.  This gives the public a chance to meet us in a non-threatening, non-judgmental environment that is really a lot of fun for both the participants and the officers.  We enjoy the opportunity to visit with participants and “show off” what we do.

As a whole, we are proud of the LaGrange Police Department and enjoy the opportunity to serve the community.  We feel that community oriented projects are a great way to work not just for the public but with the public.  Let’s face it; crime prevention is a team effort that everyone can help with.  Understanding what we do and how we do it helps coordinate the effort to our ultimate goal; a safe and prosperous community.

Our agency advertises the academy about a month before the first class in both the local newspaper and online at www.lagrangepolice.com.  The 2008 Citizen's Academy is scheduled to begin TUESDAY, AUGUST 5, 2008 at 7 P.M. You may print the application below or obtain one in person at the LaGrange Police Department. (502) 225-0444

All applicants are subject to a criminal background check prior to enrollment in the course.

All materials for the course are also provided free of charge.

FORWARD

It is with great pleasure to present the LaGrange Police Department’s third annual report.  We spend a substantial amount of time gathering and compiling statistics that are related to the daily activities of our officers.  The amount of time spent calculating these numbers is valuable for the analysis of how our resources are being used on a daily basis.  Like many police agencies when you have limited resources and staffing it is imperative for our officers to work in the most efficient manner possible.

Overall, you will notice that the activity for the City of LaGrange has increased.  This is to be expected when you have a population that is increasing and the growth of business.  Having an annual report each year will be an essential tool for us to study trends in criminal activity and traffic related issues.

The City of LaGrange is extremely fortunate to have a staff of police officers who take pride not only in their work, but also our community.  Together our goal is to do our part to make a difference in our growing city.

Alcohol Beverage Control Administration

The Limited Restaurant and Sunday sales ordinance was passed in June of 2004. The LaGrange Police Department has been responsible for overseeing the program and collecting the associated taxes. Restaurants pay an annual fee of $500 for the Limited Restaurant license and an additional $1 for the Sunday Sales license. In addition they pay quarterly taxes based on their alcohol sales less one fourth of their annual fee. The total ABC taxes collected for the City in 2007 were $19,164.

Since the origination of the ordinance, the City of LaGrange has had up to 9 restaurants, both state and city licensed. As of the end of 2007 there were 7 restaurants still doing business under the provisions provided by the Limited Restaurant ordinance. The following information is based on the documented retail sales of alcohol in each of our licensed restaurants.  Restaurants must keep their percentage of alcohol sales to 30% or less of the amount of their total sales. The sales amounts range from $2,020,558 in total sales and $242,815 in alcohol sales for Applebees to $166,339 in total sales and $7,165 in alcohol sales for Louie’s FishHouse.
